Hi everyone! This is my third time teaching DS 1 (formerly, INT 5) but it’s my first time doing so remotely. I am looking forward to implementing the new ways of introducing the Data Science material, which will help make learning easier and more engaging.

When I am not sharing my passion for Computer Science and Data Science, you used to be able to find me chatting with students, organizing board-game nights, drinking copious amounts of tea, and/or enjoying the beautiful Santa Barbara weather. This term, however, I’m going to be on the other side of the world (11-12 time zones ahead of Santa Barbara); so while I’ll still be drinking lots and lots of tea and trying to organize game nights, you might also see the results of my roaming around the city with my camera, which will likely be reflected in my Zoom backgrounds.

I am a second year PhD student in computer science and am an East Bay native. In my research, I use data science to understand complex, interconnected, physical systems. I enjoy tennis, scuba diving, learning Spanish, travelling, and short, unromantic walks on beaches.

Undergraduate Learning Assistants

Alexis C. She/her

Hi everyone! I’m Alexis, a fourth year computer science major. My preferred pronouns are she/her/hers. I’m super excited to be a tutor for DS1 this quarter! I came into UCSB with zero computer science or data science experience, and I hope to help anyone who is feeling overwhelmed by new concepts. I also hope to help everyone build confidence in their skills and place within these fields. Some of my hobbies include dancing, reading, climbing, and embroidery. I also love trying out new recipes and restaurants in my free time. I have held multiple on-campus jobs, previously as Lead Desk Attendant in Santa Cruz hall and as a tour guide. I’m a big believer in exploring things that have absolutely nothing to do with your major, whether it be clubs, classes, intramural sports, info sessions, or performances. These experiences are so important for us to become more well-rounded individuals, and serve as a reminder that we are more than our majors and GPAs. Last Fall, I studied abroad in Lund, Sweden (and deepened my love for Ikea). I was able to take upper division computer science courses and travel all over Europe. If you are even just a bit interested in studying abroad, I highly encourage you to meet with your advisor. Living and learning in another country helped me develop more confidence in myself and helped me clarify my career goals. Please feel free to reach out to me about study abroad, internships, on-campus jobs, classes, or just to chat. I look forward to working with you all this quarter!

Alyssa K. She/her

Hey everyone, my name is Alyssa!!! I’m a third year Statistics and Data Science Major with a minor in Geographical Spatial Science. I’m so excited to be tutoring for the first time in CS90DA!!! When I took this class last fall with Prof K, I was a pre-math major. After realizing I liked coding and analyzing data, I decided to change my major to data science :) Despite coming in with limited knowledge of coding, this class made me a lot more confident and I was able to breeze through my other computer science classes. As a former student of this class, one piece of advice I can give you is that you should always ask for help. When it comes to coding, there are no dumb questions. The teaching staff is still learning so anything and anyone can improve. Outside of school, I like to play tennis, go to the beach, play with my dogs and watch Korean Dramas. I’m also the publicity chair for Iaorana Te Otea, UCSB’s Polynesian Dance and Drumming Club. We offer many opportunities for dancers and drummers to perform. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me directly on piazza or during our lab/lecture zoom sessions!!! I look forward to helping you this quarter!!!!
