Onboarding instructions for Students

If you joined the course after the first lecture, there are a few onboarding steps you may need to do to get caught up.

This page summarizes those steps.

  1. If you do not already have a github account, please create one with the free plan at https://github.com/signup1

  2. Visit https://frontiers.dokku-00.cs.ucsb.edu

    • Login with your ucsb google account
    • Connect your github account.
    • Find CMPSC 5B and Click “Join Course”
    • Then click “View Invitation”
    • Then click to accept the invitation
    • After you do this step, email me to let me know, because I then need to then run the script to create your lab01, lab02, lab03, lab04 repositories.

  3. Look for an invitation to join the course on Canvas. Once you have joined on Canvas email me to let me know because I then need to sync the Gradescope roster with Canvas.

  4. On Canvas, find the link labelled Enroll in PrairieLearn for CMPSC 5B S26. Click it to join the course on PrairieLearn.

  5. Also on Canvas, find the link with the text Computer-Based Testing Information for Students. Click this, and find the part where there is a link to Schedule Your Exam in Prairie Test. Click this, and schedule a time for your first quiz (on either 04/15, 04/16, or 04/17.)

  6. Look for an invitation to the course Slack in your inbox, and join the course slack at https://ucsb-cs5b-s26.slack.com

    Then, look for the #invitations channel, and make a post in the invitations channel with this information:

    • (a) The name you want to be called in class
    • (b) The pronouns we should use to refer to you (e.g. she/her, he/him, they/them)
    • (c) Your major
    • (d) Your discussion section (1pm or 2pm)
    • (e) optional: something else you think people might find interesting about you (e.g. an interest, hobby, fun fact, pets, favorite food, etc.)

Onboarding instructors for instructors

Here are the steps to add a new student to the course.

  1. Add the student to frontiers.
  2. Add the student to Canvas
  3. Invite the student to the Slack.

When they email that they have joined Frontiers, run the script to create their repos.

When they email that they have joined Canvas, sync Gradescope with Canvas.
